You can get fat on "clean foods" or you can get shredded on "dirty" foods. But, saying that calories are the only thing that matter is a broad and misleading statement.
Let me put it this way so you can get my point...
If you care about weight loss alone, focus on calories. If you care about fat loss, focus on macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates and fats). And if you care about fat loss and health, focus on macros AND the nutritional value of food.
Because while calories alone are what determine whether we gain or lose weight, macros will determine where that weight comes from. And you shouldn't just care about body composition; You should also care about health and longevity. Therefore, you must take into account the nutritional value of food (vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants, etc.).
So be wise with the foods you eat, not just for fat loss and building muscle. But also for health, longevity and long term commitment to your diet.
